An off-the-cuff invitation in a Charlottetown hotel bar, a shared stage in a Canso rink, and a mutual love for questionable jokes…award-winning performers Kim Dunn and Terra Spencer paired up for a run of intimate shows off the beaten path in early 2025. Following the rave reception from that tour and the easy friendship that quickly grew, they are bringing the Backroads to the main stage.

Ask his fellow musicians and fortunate audiences, and both will tell you that Kim Dunn’s talent is as enviable as it is undeniable. As one of the East Coast’s most respected accompanists and arrangers, he has toured internationally for over thirty years with Rita MacNeil, Laura Smith, Heather Rankin, Bruce Guthro and many others. In the spotlight, he delivers his own well-crafted, heartfelt songs anchored by a soulful pitch-perfect tenor delivery, incomparable musicianship, and sly charm.

Currently nominated for Music Nova Scotia Entertainer of the Year, Terra Spencer has quickly secured a spot in the Maritime songwriting ranks, with four albums released since 2018. Making the unusual leap from life as a small-town funeral director to one of the busiest musicians on the folk circuit, she has kept company with the likes of Ben Caplan, Matt Andersen, and David Francey, who recruited her for his 2024 Juno-winning album ‘The Breath Between’. Butterscotch vocals, deft guitar, piano chops, and her quick wit led to Ron Sexsmith naming her “the real deal”.

Join Kim and Terra for a celebration of new friendships, old souls, favourite songs, and irrepressible laughs.

Enjoy an evening of stellar music with up and coming musical artists “Moira & Claire” who will entertain us the first half of the evening, and Pictou County’s “Jud Gunning” who will fill the last half with his sensational guitar picking. Come out and support these incredibly talented performers - you will not be disappointed!

The intricate harmonies of sisters Moira and Claire first rang out from the backseat of the family car on cross-country road trips when they were kids. They’ve come a long way since, but the strong sibling bond of their musical chemistry remains the same. Their songwriting is full of subtle sophistication, perfectly unexpected moments, and hard-won lyrical wisdom. The clever simplicity they’re able to draw out of life’s complexities makes for honest, intimate, and relatable songs that have connected with thousands of people globally. On stage, the duo’s authenticity, sense of humour and natural charisma is magnetic - compelling harmonies paired with whip-smart lyrics create a live experience that’s emotionally vulnerable, sometimes funny, and always relatable.

https://moiraandclaire.bandcamp.com/

Jud Gunning has a genuine love for playing music and has been making a name for himself in the Nova Scotian music scene. With performances at the Stan Rogers Folk Festival, the Pictou Lobster Carnival and the New Glasgow Jubilee under his belt, Jud has captivated live audiences across the Maritime provinces, and has only just begun.

Dedicated to the craft of guitar playing, with an appreciation for artists such as Chet Atkins, Doc Watson, John Allan Cameron, Buddy Holly, Roger Miller, Hank Snow, Stompin’ Tom Connors and the Delmore Brothers, Jud Gunning has been building up a strong repertoire of classic songs and instrumentals.

He looks forward to following in the footsteps of his musical heroes, and taking his talent wherever the road may lead him.

THE SKELETON DANCE is a play for all ages about DEATH (YAY!)
It is a highly physical, energetic, and light-hearted play with elements of creative movement, clown, and puppetry - created and performed by Emma James (they/them) and Ella MacDonald (she/her). It runs approximately 50 minutes, invites structured audience participation, and is always followed by a meet-and-greet or talk back. In THE SKELETON DANCE, two young children, Emma and Ella, process the news that their Uncle Trout has suddenly passed away. They consider the implications of this in an entertaining, irreverent way, where the audience is privy to their many whimsical theories about death. Despite the subject of death being widely perceived as inherently difficult subject matter, The Skeleton Dance is playful, light-hearted and irreverent. THE SKELETON DANCE guides audiences through grief through the lens of a child: all feelings are okay, there are no bad questions, and we must process through connection and play.
